Volkswagen do Brasil has announced the Kombi Last Edition, a special commemorative series of one of the most successful Volkswagen models in Brazil and manufactured there since 2 September 1957. The last of these iconic vehicles is expected to roll from the production line on December 31 this year.
The Kombi Last Edition has a limited production run of only 600 units and features exclusive body paint, luxury internal finishing and design elements which give a nod to the many versions made in Brazil over the past 56 years.
Although the end of production was planned and made known by Volkswagen some time ago, the Last Edition series was announced on August 14 by Volkswagen do Brasil. The main reason for the model’s retirement is that legislation in Brazil will allow only models equipped with ABS brakes and dual airbags to be produced from 2014. Volkswagen managed to install airbags in the Kombi a while back, but was not able to engineer an antilock brake system onto it and therefore have called time on the aging classic.

Volkswagen do Brasil have announced that to celebrate the end of this legendary vehicle, a limited production Kombi Last Edition will be made available. The model comes with special two-tone white and blue body paint and each vehicle will be fitted with a numbered identification plaque on the dashboard. Special design details such as whitewall tyres, white hub caps and tinted rear windows provide an extra touch of nostalgia.
The upper section of the front grille, headlights and indicator rims come in the same colour as the exterior. Front turn signal lamps feature white crystal lenses. At the side of the vehicle decals help identify the special series: ‘56 anos – Kombi Last Edition’.
Inside, the Volkswagen Kombi Last Edition features distinctive blue fabric curtains in the side and rear windows and curtain ties are embroidered with the ‘Kombi’ logo, a feature typical of the model’s top versions from the 1960s and 70s.
The seats come in special vinyl upholstery, with sides in Atlanta Blue and a matching two-tone centre (blue and white). The model can seat up to nine people.
The internal side, door and cargo panels are also upholstered in Atlanta Blue vinyl and are finished with decorative stitching. The cabin and luggage area floors are fitted with carpet and dilour Basalto inserts, the same material that covers the spare tyre.
The instrument cluster boasts a special serigraph treatment and keeps the traditional Kombi design of speedometer at the centre and fuel gauge on the right. The MP3 sound system has red LEDs and features auxiliary and USB ports.
Each Kombi Last Edition is provided with a special certificate of authenticity.
The model is equipped with a rear-mounted liquid-cooled EA111 ‘Total Flex’ 1.4-litre engine, which delivers 78 PS when used with petrol/gasoline or 80 PS when used with sugar cane-produced ethanol (both at 4,800 rpm) and uses a four speed manual transmission.
Sadly, this final limited edition is only being marketed in Brazil , although some examples are likely to be sold by Bristol-based Danbury MotorCaravans who regularly import the classic Kombi from Volkswagen do Brasil. Link: http://www.danburymotorcaravans.com/
It’s no bargain though… Reports suggest that the Last Edition is priced with a hefty premium at around £24,000 ($36,000 US) in its home market, twice as much as the standard version, although even at that price I’m sure they’ll be sold out in no time. For that kind of money I would have expected the ugly black plastic radiator grille to be painted blue which kind of lets down the external appearance, especially as they’ve made such an effort with the rest of the vehicle, but you can’t have everything I suppose.
